Hōbun was a student of the late nineteenth century artist Bairei Kōno. Like Bairei, many of Hōbun’s pictures feature flower and (or) bird subjects. This gallery shows the thirty-three pictures of flowers and (or) birds that he included in a woodblock-printed picture book entitled Hōbun Gafu (i.e., Picture Album by Hōbun) and published in 1890. Hōbun chose to use only color highlights instead of full color in this book likely because his teacher Bairei also used only partial color in most of his flower-bird picture books.
